Hamzanwadi University Supports Community-Based Mangrove Ecotourism Development in East Lombok

Mataram, November 12, 2025 — Hamzanwadi University participated in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the Regional Government, the East Lombok Legislative Council (DPRD), the Environment Agency, and practitioners to discuss plans for developing community-based Mangrove Ecotourism in Seruni Mumbul Village and Sugian Village. This activity is an important step in efforts to realize sustainable tourism that is environmentally friendly and prioritizes community welfare.

During the discussion, participants provided various inputs regarding the basic needs for area development, such as road access improvement, provision of public facilities, free Wi-Fi access, and promotion strategies through social media and mass media. Environmental management aspects also received attention, particularly regarding waste handling to ensure the ecotourism does not have a negative impact on the mangrove ecosystem.

Participants also emphasized the importance of establishing a clear management structure for the ecotourism operation with a clear division of tasks, as well as empowering local MSMEs so that the surrounding community can enjoy the economic benefits. Hamzanwadi University is ready to contribute through research and community service activities to support planning, training, and the digitalization of ecotourism promotion.

The representative of Hamzanwadi University expressed hope that the Mangrove Ecotourism area would not only become a tourist destination but also a learning resource for university and school students at various educational levels. Mangroves play an important role in climate change mitigation due to their ability to absorb carbon, while also having economic potential through the processing of mangrove fruit into high-value products.
